MAES (Person-Centred Education)

ghfp   The GHFP is collaborating with the Sussex School of Education to offer an innovative programme on Person-Centred Education (PCE) leading to MA Education Studies.

The GHFP believes that for a human-centred education vision to take root in mainstream education and benefit more children young people and other learners, it is important to explore the concept in a deep and scholarly manner. We also propose that in educational innovation, research and practice must go hand-in-hand. Teachers are well-posited within educational institutions to launch research inquiries and investigate how best to nurture students' learning, growth and well-being.

Our commitment to educational innovation has led us to developing a unique Masters in Education Studies programme that has a focus on Person-Centred Education. Person-Centred Education (PCE) is based on the premise that learning is an active search for meaning and understanding. It is achieved through engaging in a set of positive human relations within a community, realised not only through an academic programme, but also through encounter, participation, dialogue and inquiry. 'Person-Centred' and 'Human-Centred' are understood as synonymous.

  What our students say:

"I have become more confident and have a stronger belief in myself. I am more aware of person-centred education and will strive to incorporate it in my work."

"I have learned to trust the opportunities that are presented to me as things to consider, even if not to always follow. I have learned to listen carefully to others talk about their journeys and to become more analytical about the motivations and meaning behind some of the things we say and do. I have also become more observant and from there reflective and reflexive."
learning biography   The GHFP's Masters' programme also features the writing of a learning biography. The group-based narrative process enables stronger personal connections between the students and helps them identify trajectories for learning and research during their studies and in their everyday teaching.

As one of these students says, the narrative and biographical process leads students into a consideration of their missions in the world and what they can do to bring meaning to life and education. Narrative learning is thus an important aspect of the MA.
Further to teaching and convening, each year the GHFP sponsors up to eight MA students by offering a partial scholarship to subsidise tuition fees. To discuss or apply for the programme and the scholarship to study, please contact the course convenor Dr Scherto Gill.
